SOILS is a polygon coverage with soil attribute information for the Whatcom County area in Washington state. Attribute information include: full soil classification, soil complex names and slope characteristics, unique soil IDs, attributes from State Soil Survey publications, Soil attributes originally recorded for PFLG maps, SOILS-POCA cross-reference file, and Geographically-specific soil data. Information for the SOILS data layer was derived by DNR from the Private Forest Land Grading system (PFLG) and subsequent soil surveys.
- Purpose:

Private Forest Land Grading (PFLG) was a five year mapping program completed in 1980 for the purpose of forest land taxation. It was funded by the Washington State Department of Revenue in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources, Soil Conservation Service (SCS), USDA Forest Service and Washington State University. This soil survey is an inventory and evaluation of the soils in the survey area. It can be used to adjust land uses to the limitations and potentials of natural soil-related failures in land uses.

Field Work: Processing of 1980 aerial photos to produce polygons for soils. Then the digital line set were developed from the aerial photos corrected to orthophotos and then digitized. Attributing was done by both the DNR and the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) so there are different IDs and attributes for the same polygons. The soil characteristics were entered by the field worker.
