Supplemental Information:
Although North Cascades National Park was managed as wilderness from the very beginning, it was not until 1988 that its management policies were given the strength of law. In that year, Congress designated 93 percent of the entire North Cascades Complex as the Stephen Mather Wilderness. The Wilderness is named for Stephen Mather (1867-1930), first director of the National Park Service (1916-1929).
